Go Analog

What could you do less of?

If I had to choose something to do less of, it would be relying on digital devices for every tiny moment of my day. A small shift I made recently—ditching my Apple Watch and returning to a simple analog one—has had a surprisingly large impact. That one step in de-digitizing myself removed a constant stream of taps, pings, and micro-notifications that were shaping my attention far more than I realized. Without that subtle digital tug on my wrist, I feel less rushed, less pulled, and more present in my actual life.

What’s interesting is that the science backs up why such a small change feels so big. Research shows that even the presence of a smart device can increase cognitive load, because part of your brain stays on standby waiting for potential notifications. Studies also suggest that micro-distractions—those split-second glances at screens—can take the brain more than 20 minutes to fully refocus afterward. Removing that constant, low-level vigilance has given me space to think more deeply, focus longer, and feel more grounded throughout the day.

The best part is how unexpectedly satisfying it’s been. My analog watch doesn’t ask anything from me; it just tells time—and it looks great doing it. That tiny downgrade in technology has become an upgrade in clarity, calm, and intentionality. It reminds me that “doing less” isn’t always about dramatic lifestyle overhauls. Sometimes it’s as simple as choosing one small analog anchor that gently pulls you back into your real life.
